General information:
The name "Neerhem" is derived from the words "Neer" (low) and "heim" (home or settlement). The hamlet of Neerhem gradually developed over the centuries outside the Berkelpoort, one of Valkenburg's three historic city gates, although large-scale residential development only took place after the Second World War. From Neerhem, the historic Dwingel runs along the southeastern side of Valkenburg Castle. This old, partially hidden road leads to the Daalhemerweg on the opposite side of the Heunsberg and once formed part of the castle's defensive structures.
Until 1940, Neerhem belonged to the municipality of Oud Valkenburg. At that time, the street was known as Oud-Valkenburgerweg. In 1886, the road was widened and enhanced by the Valkenburg Tourist Board (VVV Het Geuldal), which had been established the previous year, by planting a row of trees along the southern side. A few years later, in 1892, the impressive spa hotel Huis ter Geul (now Parkhotel Valkenburg) was completed, designed by the renowned architect Pierre Cuypers.
Valkenburg town centre, with all daily amenities, is within walking distance, as is public transport. The main roads towards Heerlen and Maastricht can be reached within just a few minutes by car.
